SEAT key sticking? Call 02382 180574
SEATs are often bought as first cars, family runabouts and high-mileage commuters — which means plenty of keys turned plenty of times. On supported Ibiza, Leon and Altea models, worn ignition barrels, sticking keys and steering lock problems can be assessed wherever the car is parked in Eastleigh.

What we see on SEAT ignitions
Older Ibizas and Leons often reach us as second- or third-owner cars with a single key that has done all the work for years. That one key and the barrel it lives in wear together, and by the time it starts catching, both usually show it. A key that sticks in one position, needs pressing in slightly to turn, or turns smoothly one day and not the next are typical signs.
The Altea, being a taller family car, tends to come in with the same mechanical wear plus the occasional steering lock that is under load because the car was parked with the wheels turned against a kerb.
Volkswagen Group roots — with differences
SEAT shares engineering and some component designs with Volkswagen, Audi and Škoda, and parts of the ignition and steering lock arrangement can be similar. Exact arrangements still vary by model, year and market, so a part that fits one car in the group is not assumed to fit another. Checking the specific vehicle comes first.
Mechanical or electrical?
Mechanical ignition wear
Wafers in the barrel wear against the key, and the key's cuts wear down too. The result can be a key that sticks, will not turn, or will not come out.
Steering lock mechanism
Where the steering lock is loaded or its housing is worn, the key can feel jammed even though the barrel is fine.
Electrical ignition switch
Where applicable, a key that turns but brings no dash lights or no crank may indicate a switch fault — or a battery, wiring, starter or immobiliser problem. Each is checked before anything is replaced.
Repair or replace
Where the barrel body is sound, repair may be possible and the barrel set to work with a correctly cut key. If the barrel or housing is damaged, replacement is recommended. Whether your existing key can be kept depends on the repair method and the vehicle. If you also need a spare while the work is done, see spare car keys; other SEAT key work is listed under car keys by make.
SEAT ignition FAQs
My Ibiza key only turns if I push it in — why?
That can be caused by worn wafers or a worn key blade not lifting the wafers fully. It tends to get worse, so it is worth getting looked at.
Is a SEAT ignition the same as a Volkswagen one?
Some designs are shared, but not all. The exact arrangement is confirmed for your vehicle before parts are chosen.
Can you repair a Leon ignition barrel?
For supported Leon models with a mechanical ignition, repair may be possible depending on condition. Replacement is used where repair is not practical.
