Audi Ignition Repair & Replacement in Eastleigh
Audi ignition trouble? Call 02382 180574
Audi ignition work starts with one question: which ignition does your car actually have? Across the A1, A3, A4 and TT the answer changes between generations — and on supported models with a mechanical ignition, stiff keys, worn barrels and switch faults can be diagnosed at your vehicle in Eastleigh.

Identifying the ignition fitted
Audi has moved through several ignition designs. Earlier A3, A4 and TT models use a conventional key-in barrel with a flip key. Some later cars use a key or fob that is pushed into a dash-mounted electronic slot rather than turned in a barrel, and many current models are fully keyless with a start button. These are completely different systems: an electronic or keyless ignition does not contain the mechanical wafers, barrel or steering lock housing that wear on older cars.
Because of that, not every Audi ignition is something we support. The registration and a quick description of how you start the car are enough to confirm whether yours is a mechanical system we can help with.
Common Audi ignition faults
Key becoming stiff
On mechanical systems, a key that has become stiff over time can be caused by wear in the barrel wafers or on the key blade itself. Audi flip keys are used heavily, and the blade wears along with the barrel.
Key failing to turn
A key that will not rotate may indicate barrel wear, a worn blade, or a steering lock under load. Gently moving the steering wheel can free a loaded lock; beyond that it needs inspecting rather than forcing.
Steering lock housing issues
The barrel sits in a housing that also operates the steering lock. A worn housing can stop the key turning even when the barrel itself is fine — so replacing the barrel alone would not fix it.
Ignition switch faults
Behind the barrel is an electrical switch. A key that turns freely with no dash lights or no crank may point to that switch, though battery, wiring, starter and immobiliser faults can show the same signs.
Diagnose first, replace second
Replacing the wrong part is the most expensive mistake with any ignition. A new barrel will not cure a worn housing, and a new switch will not cure a flat battery. On an Audi, the barrel, housing, switch and key are each checked so that only the part actually at fault is repaired or replaced. Where repair is possible it will be offered; where it is not, you will be told why.
Audi shares engineering with Volkswagen, but trim, generation and market differences mean parts are not automatically interchangeable. For key work on the same cars, see Audi car keys.
Audi ignition FAQs
Do you repair keyless Audi ignitions?
Keyless and electronic slot ignitions are different systems from a mechanical barrel. Tell us the registration and we will confirm whether your car is supported.
My A3 key is getting stiff — what should I do?
Avoid forcing it, try your spare key if you have one, and get it looked at early. Stiffness that is caught early usually leaves more options.
Will a replacement barrel work with my original key?
Not always. Depending on the parts and method, the barrel may be set to your key or a new key cut to suit it.
